GALESBURG — Bryce Lester has questions. Who? What? Why?

The 17-year-old Galesburg High School senior’s curiosity isn’t hard to detect. Lester likes to meet others, shake hands and start to ask questions.

Lester’s inquisitive nature — and desire to help others — recently brought a state representative to GHS and prompted Lester to start a charity drive.

GHS special education teacher Nancy Dillard said Lester is an engaging, challenging student who isn’t afraid to ask.

“I have to stay on my toes with Bryce,” she said. “Bryce asks really interesting, challenging and insightful questions. He is just really interested in how things work and why they work.

“What makes it even more challenging for me is that Bryce keeps up with the news — he reads and watches and pays close attention. Then he has questions.”

Dillard said recent activities in Lester’s civics class left him with plenty of questions about government.

“Bryce was very interested in the mechanics of government, and about the development of bills. He started asking a lot of really good questions.”

Those questions led Lester to ask District 74 State Rep. Dan Swanson (R-Alpha) to visit his civics class.


“I had more questions and I thought it would be pretty cool if we had a representative come here and explain things to us,” Lester said. “I looked Swanson up online and there was an email link.

“I sent a letter inviting Rep. Swanson our class. I told Ms. Dillard about it, but I really didn’t think it would go anywhere.”
